Fried Green-ish Tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes is a side dish originating in the southern part of the United States. I’d never eaten it before. I had a unripe tomatoes that were hard with equal parts red and green that I wanted to use. Green tomatoes would be better in this dish because they would be firmer and maintain their shape better when fried. I looked through a few cook books I came up my own recipe using those books for inspiration.

This is my recipe for fried green-ish tomatoes.


  • 4 semi-ripe beefsteak tomatoes (green would be preferable)


  • 1/2 cup of cornmeal

  • 1/2 cup of flour

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

  • 1 teaspoon of paprika

  • 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary

  • 1 tablespoon of black pepper

  • cooking oil





  • Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 inch slices and season them with salt.



  • Mix the next 5 ingredients in a bowl.




  • Coat the tomato slices with the breading mix.




  • Heat some oil in a pan and and shallow fry the tomatoes on each side until they’re golden.
